This African figure comes from artisans of the Fang People. The Fang people would practice rituals to protect themselves from their ancestors and to recruit their aid in matters of daily life. This Fang reliquary figure would be placed by the fang on boxes that would contain skulls and skeletons to personify the tribal soul. They may also be used therapeutic rituals and for initiations for young Fang males during festivals.
